I believe the site should be sent a major virus. The comments are down right nasty from students that fail. College is not ment for everyone. There is no “child left behind act” to ensure everyone gets a degree.

Students don’t even feel they should work for an A. Everything for them is too hard. Its sad to see they level of students in remedial class at college. They are are lazy students.

  11. Holly Chavez Says:

It is sad to read the comment this teacher left. He assumes that everyone that’s critical of him must be a bad student. I make very good grades, but I have left a few comments about some things that I felt teachers could have been better at. Teachers are just like anyone else. You have good ones and bad ones. Also, if you are going to insult your student’s level of intelligence, make sure you spell the word meant right! The blog he left looks extremely unprofessional and lazy, too.

  12. bloke Says:

the professor looks like a *** - he’s from the UK .. ..what do u expect?

  13. JJ Says:

I agree with Holly. While some students are lazy and do not want to work for a grade, others are not to blame for crazy teachers! I am an A student, and I still have complaints about teachers I get good grades from. Some people should not teacher, either because they do not really know what they are teaching, they are simple poor teachers/communicators, or they are unstable. Saying the sight should be sent a virus is petty. This sight helps students avoid crazy, creepy teachers, and/or evaluate which teachers will suit their learning preferences. This sight is not here for teacher bashing, it is to help the students choose which teachers will teach them best. For example, if the teacher is said to use the book primarily, and a student prefers to learn from lectures, then this is very useful, and vice versa. I bet teachers wish they had a sight like this where they could learn about the students and then choose who they will allow into their class!!! This professor should just grow up and get over it that some students do not like him. Obviously it is not too big of a problem, because if it were no one would take his class! Up until I read his tirade about this site getting a virus (which I know was a joke, but still infantile) I thought I would have liked to have taken him!

  14. d Says:

if JJ is such an “A” student how come there are so many grammatical errors in his response.

  15. MMF Says:

d, it’s the internet. it makes it socially acceptable to write with many grammatical errors. i’m sure if jj were to sit down and write a paper to turn in, things would be different.

  16. amanda Says:

wow…i think that guy is funny

  17. JJ Says:

Wow D, that’s the best you got? Because I was tired and am sick? Maybe I am an A student because I study my butt off and when I am turning in papers I put a little more effort into grammar checking my work.
Why does what I said offend you? If you have an issue with what i said, address the content not a handful of grammar/spelling issues.
    Thank you MMF.

  18. E Says:

I personally think it’s hilarious that “d” asked a question and did not put a capital letter at the beginning nor a question mark at the end, if grammar is so important, shouldn’t he remember punctuation and capitalization? Just a thought to ponder on the next time someone bashes on someone else and does the EXACT same thing.

  19. Shannon P Says:

I have to say that I caught a wallpost on JJ’s facebook and this is the first I’ve heard of this site, and laughed my butt off at your responses CH. Hilarious!

  20. Amy Says:

I am laughing so hard I almost peed my pants …

  21. Sepehr Says:

wow! i feel sorry for you guys, if somebody even teach me one minute of something worthy i will respect that person! teaching is the hardest thing specially to the current dumb and rude generation. I’m 23 and i hate myself to love teaching because of students like you! and that guys who said this teacher is from UK? So what? who are you? nobody

  22. Jones Says:

HAHAHA, okay, the last one is hilarious. Sick Willy Shakespeare and I go way back, and this professor is awesome. Granted, I can never get anything above an A-, but that just proves he’s not willing to hand out grades.

also, just as a side note, you guys do realize that you can write ANYTHING in the name section of your posting? I really don’t think Highley is a stupid man, he’s not going to write “teacher” and then spell meant without an “a”, or use the wrong variant of “it’s”.

Do you have any brains at all? Of course he didn’t post that. Let’s be serious.

  23. Megan Says:

Highley was my professor and he’s awesome. He’s really funny and if you are there to learn then he’s there to teach you. But don’t expect him to be easy or appease you… he’s there to teach not to babysit and he certainly won’t hold your hand to get you an A. However, if you are one of the lucky ones to get to go on a trip with him at the end of your class as I got to go with him and our class to London… the man is the greatest tour guide EVER– pub crawling and all!!!

These responses are pure Highley-isms. The videos are hilarious and oh so true. I love the response of “Your Mediocrity Makes Him Weep.” So beautifully said as Highley would say it.

    GO HIGHLEY!!!!

  24. College Student Says:

Regarding the comment left at April 3rd, 2008 at 3:13 pm.
There are some teachers out there that are terrible and really do not know how to teach. I have had some teachers copy stuff directly from the book without explaining anything and made students feel really stupid for asking questions. Which caused some students to withdraw because they would rather have a teacher who enjoys teaching and has no problem with explaining things properly and love having students participate.
[this isn’t referring to the Professor Highly. Just referring to some teachers I have had in the past at my college].
So don’t just blame the students there are some professors who do deserve lower ratings.

  25. eng student Says:

What is so funny?? Why does everybody here seems to feel funny after looking at this video? I think this professor is down right cocky, I personally believes students are in college because they are in pursuits of EDUCATION, while most of the professors are in college for their jobs in pursuits of their own FUTURE. That’s why most of the professors have this kind of arogant attitude. that’s just sad!

  26. EL Says:

He seems like a really witty teacher! I don’t think he’s arrogant; he’s probably just being exasperated beyond belief at the inanity of those comments! And I love that English accent.

    RUDEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
can’t believe that a teacher could say such things. I am surprised.

  28. Another Teacher Says:

I’m convinced that the actual teacher didn’t make the comment you are referring to. It was just someone trying to make him look bad.

btw, I loved the stare response! Very Funny!!

  29. Parent Says:

I’m sure the Chairs, Deans, and even Provosts are reading students and profs comments, and need to rid the university of those who do not know how to teach. Get a different job if your not interested in teaching.
Don’t think you could make it in the real world without that union of yours.
Your attempt at a sense of humor is blantant arrogance!
What is the definition of a professor?
    Main Entry:pro·fes·sor~Pronunciation:\prə-ˈfe-sər\~Function: noun~14th century
1: one that professes, avows, or declares
2 a: a faculty member of the highest academic rank at an institution of higher education b: a teacher at a university, college, or sometimes secondary school c: Duh…ONE THAT TEACHES OR PROFESSES SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE OF AN ART, SPORT OR OCCUPATION REQUIRING SKILL.

  30. Taten Coleman Says:

Maybe the reason this parent is complaining is because their kid is dumb. Obviously they got it from somewhere since this ADULT cannot use “your/you’re” correctly.

  31. Wordsworth Says:

He doesn’t seem that bad, but I wish he could elaborate more on what his class room would be like because I don’t want to judge him just yet. If teachers had a “Day In The Life” type of video, it would be very helpful.

  32. Dan K Says:

He’s probably a great professor. I find that i learn more from professors who are unique and stand out from the norm, especially very weird professors. Does anybody ever learn much from normal, boring, average professors?

  33. jezz Says:

i can’t stand anymore of that Brittish sense humor… Someone needs to tell him he is not funny.

  34. JJ Says:

I totally agree with Wordsworth! That would be really great fr determining if you should take someone’s class. However, you can sit in on most professor’s classes.

Also, even if “teacher” is a teacher and misspelled “meant” so what? Not every teacher is good at spelling. I have had amazing teachers who couldn’t spell to save their life; plus, when typing it is easy to make a mistake. Someone’s teaching credibility should not be questioned based upon a spelling error.
Now that I think about it though, I do admit my error. Assuming that “teacher” is Highley was incorrect of me. So I guess this leaves me with still thinking Highley seems ok.

  35. John Says:

    A condescending, unprofessional imbecile.

  36. JJ Says:

John, you seem to say this a lot. Care to elaborate? I am sorry that you seem to want and/or expect your instructors to always be polite and kind. Your college experience must not be very good so far.

Let’s try again. (Warning: Don’t embed html commands–I think.)

I think this is a question of style. When someone is becoming a professor, he chooses to be John Houseman, Robin Williams, or Richard Burton (_mutatis mutandis_ and female role models not withstanding). I think Highley is neither funny nor un-funny. He’s merely playing a role here in three, brief, edited scenes. I’m sure his repertory is more wide-ranging and depends on the specific subject taught and the nature of the student body that semester (or day).

  41. Alexander F. Mutter, B.A., D.S.,b Says:

As a 1966 high school graduate from the small, middle eastern city of Portsmouth, Virginia, I truly must laugh out loud. Yes, I attended college from 1966 through 1969. A nasty, brutish war intruded into my hitherto sylvan educational experience. I returned to find that my last college had, itself, graduated to university status. Nonetheless, they took me back with open arms when they discovered my open checkbook. This transpired, I believe, circa the Year of our Lord, nineteen hundred seventy seven. I graduated from the Old Dimonion (sic) University in the city of Norfolk, Virginia in the spring of 1979 at the ripe old age of 31.

That said, I would actually like to thank every English teacher that ever taught me in my six years of higher public education (grades 7-12), for giving me my undying love of my native language, and, my humble command of said language. I laugh (see above) because I am truly amazed at the college-age students whom have posted here before me, who have absolutely NO grasp of composition, spelling, punctuation, nor grammar. Also, I, personally, found the professor’s video rebuttals to be, as we were once wont to say, “s stone hoot”!

    Respectfully submitted,
    Alexander F. Mutter, B.A., D.S., b (a.k.a., the Mad Mutt)

  42. Brandon Says:

Wow. Very classy, *******. Hope you feel good about yourself, you limey *****. These students are paying your salary and you’re so petty as to strike back at them? The comment about making a student cry is downright pathetic on your part. The comment was not vicious and seemed heartfelt. What goes around comes around, and it would be great to see someone wipe that cockney grin off your face. You’re a disgrace to the University and all that it stands for. Email me back at bluejackets_guy@yahoo.com if you want to exchange intelligent discourse on the topic. Might want to get ahold of your colleagues in the theater department while you’re at it.

  43. TATEN COLEMAN IS AN IDIOT Says:

TATEN COLEMAN INCORRECTLY CRITICIZED SOMEBODY! HAHA! WHAT AN IDIOT! HE SAID A PARENT USED THE WORD “YOUR/YOU’RE” INCORRECTLY WHEN THEY CLEARLY USED IT CORRECTLY. TATEN YOUR A COMPLETE IMBECILE! HAHA! MY STOMACH HURTS FROM THE IMMENSE LAUGHTER!

P.S. DON’T GET EXCITED! I INCORRECTLY PUT THE WORD ”YOUR” INSTEAD OF “YOU’RE” INTENTIONALLY! HAHA!

  44. rick Says:

What a ******! His patronizing demeanor is typical of a nerdy child who was forced to escape his pathetic childhood by burying his face in a boring Brittish novel. Proofread this, Professor Plum!

  45. Rogatien Says:

TATEN COLEMAN IS AN IDIOT is an idiot. Taten Coleman, on the other hand, knows what he is talking about, at least in the matter of your/your’re

  46. Brandon Says:

Brittish comedy died with Monty Python and Benny Hill. Not that funny, Professor. Bad teacher and horrid comedian, I hope you find SOMETHING you’re good at. Oh and for accountability, you can see my email address in the comment above. I don’t want to come off as an anonymous basher. As an Ohio State grad, you are a disgrace. If you’re gonna do another one of these, try including some actual wit and humor. Or you may try respecting the students you teach and the position you hold and keep your juvenile attempts at comedy to yourself.

  47. Risa Says:

    Brandon, you spelled British incorrectly.

  48. Erik Says:

You may want to procure your meds, Brandon, and relax a bit. The good Professor Highley is merely providing the type of entertainment that the majority of the people comprising the demographic viewing the “professor rebuttals” section are seeking: namely, sarcastic and tongue-in-cheek rebuttals. I personally find his sense of humor to be a refreshing change from the stiff-collared disposition most of my teachers had/have, although I concede that a sense of humor can be a highly individualistic and interpretative behavior which intrinsically precipitates the formation of diametrically-opposing views.
How is the fact that you’re an OSU graduate relevant to this discourse? Are you the singular person setting the standard for professional conduct for the University? Finally, if you feel that British comedy died with the dissolution of Python and the passing of Hill, than you obviously have not been watching British media for the last 26 years. The UK has and continues to produce a great deal of comedic media.

  49. Ramón Raquello Says:

A propos of Erik’s comment: _The Office_ (Merchant & Gervais), to name one not-so-dead British comedy.

  50. Brandon Says:

As a graduate of Ohio State, I expect faculty and alumni to act with a certain amount of grace and dignity, I think that makes it relevant to the discourse. Respecting each other and current students. Maybe I ask too much. A tongue-in-cheek response may have been appropriate if the initial comment by the student was in any way vindictive or mean spirited. It was an honest comment made by a young student. I assume young because the professor later made reference to the level of the classes he instructs. Sarcasm and condescension may be what people are looking for on this site, but has no place coming from an instructor in the classroom, as apparently was the catalyst for the original comment.

Risa, thanks for the spelling lesson, much appreciated.

    Erik, go F yourself.

    Highly, lick my taint.

Ramon, the only good thing to come out of England since Monty Python and Benny Hill is Hugh Laurie, and even he has to put on an American accent to get by. Oh, thanks for Mr. Bean, England. We love that guy. Christ.

I’m sure you came to this site for witticisms like that.

  51. Ramón Raquello Says:

You mean Hugh Laurie in _Blackadder_? But seriously, this is an entertainment site not a pedagogy site. No academic is going to learn anything from 21st-century student graffiti placed on this wall. Sad, but true. I’ve never seen a bad teacher become good even via peer reviews and faculty criticisms. ‘Taint gonna happen.

  52. Erik Says:

Brandon, you’re the first person to make me cry since the 6th grade.

  53. Brandon Says:

How do you suggest a teacher improves? By not listening to criticisms of students and faculty and doing nothing? Ramon, I appreciate your input, I just doubt anything could turn this pompous jerk into a respected instructor. It makes me happy I was a psych major and didn’t have to deal with arrogant, smarmy english professors like this. Chris Highley, making the case for online classes.

  54. Brandon Says:

Erik, first post without a five syllable word to show us how smart you are. Congratulations.

  55. kandice Says:

    What an insensitive jerk!

  56. Genevieve Wagner Says:

He’s here to teach, not hold your hand throughout the course. Most profs teach so they can do research in their field of interest.
    Suck it up.

  57. Meg Says:

Highley is amazing. He’s a great teacher who doesn’t accept your mediocrity. Nothing wrong with that. He cares greatly and that’s why he doesn’t let you coast. He’s funny… his class is fun and he’ll make you learn while you laugh. I highly (haha) recommend any of his classes!

and Brandon- haha psych major. That figures. Go post about your psych classes and your penis envy and leave Highley alone- jackass.

PS England is pretty freaking awesome, actually. Obviously you’ve never been and obviously you wouldn’t be welcome there- but don’t worry- I’m sure you’re far above learning about other cultures AND far above an entire country. Ever think that YOU are the smarmy *******?

GO HIGHLEY!! Best Prof EVER!!! English 520 all the way!

  58. Sally Mae Says:

    You are hilarious.

  59. Thuy Says:

Oh you naiive people just don’t know any better until you try to teach a classroom full of children you think they are adults because they are in college, but 80% of students don’t even engage in the work. More so, they have this annoying undeserving sense of entitlement.

For people who think that professors who are only paid to teach, it’s not true! We are paid to do research. Just because you pay tuition does not mean you are entitled to a diploma.

  60. Lou Says:

Highley seems like a personable man with a good sense of humour who does not take himself too seriously, and I know many men that resemble him in this respect, from Britain and from America. Obviously, some of the people posting here take themselves far too seriously, perhaps because they are still young and have not yet learned how important it is to laugh at themselves. Mind you, calling other people names on the basis of their country of origin is a problem that is not so easily cured by maturing.

Those who disparage British comedy are illustrating their own lack of wit: Mr. Bean may not be considered funny by some (including me), but it is surely more amusing than many of the lame comedy shows produced by American networks. Compare the original “Fawlty Towers” to the American version, which completely missed the whole self-deprecating humour of the original. “Coupling” far exceeds “Friends”, the American equivalent. Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Lawrie, and Stephen Fry (”Blackadder”, “Jeeves and Wooster”, “Absolute Power”) are three of the funniest men on earth, and Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley (”Absolutely Fabulous”, “The Vivian Vile Show) prove that it’s not just British men that provide the laughs.

British academics are common in North American universities and the ones I’ve encountered have shown the same positive and negative traits as those from any other country, including the United States. Bashing them is a sign of ignorance and spite, and says more about the basher than the bashee.

  61. Tai Says:

I’m so sorry that I missed this professor when I attended the Ohio State University.

  62. Jennifer Says:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! This guy is funny. Makes me want to transfer to Ohio State! Kudos to you, Dr. Highley.

  63. collegestud Says:

this man is an idiot and your called a professor what a joke.

how about no one takes his class and he’ll have to quit.

im good though im no where near this guys school

  64. Pamela C. Says:

Is Lou related to this guy?

  65. peg Says:

I don’t even go to this school and I thought Prof. H’s reply was wicked funny. First, if you MUST go to him during office hours, it means you don’t get it! And probably never will. And therefore, the stare of DISBELIEF! hehehehehehehehehehe

  66. peg Says:

I don’t even go to this school and I thought Prof. H’s reply was wicked funny. First, if you MUST go to him during office hours, it means you don’t get it! And probably never will. And therefore, the stare of DISBELIEF! he he he

  67. Older Student Says:

The mere fact that he [Prof Highley] is willing to take the time to create these short (entertaining) snippets demonstrates that he does not take himself too seriously. He is obviously engaging and willing to inject a bit of comedy, albeit with an apparent laconism, “your paper made me cry…” God help the person who “cried” when his or her paper was graded. What do you think will happen when you get a job in the real world and you provide a less-than-acceptable product? Sniff, sniff. Sure hope your manager doesn’t make you cry.

  68. hey its me Says:

does this guy remind anyone of stephen colbert??? if i was going to ohio state id probably take this guy. seems like hes freakin awesome

  69. Jen Says:

I find it pretty funny how so many people seem to fine one bad thing to say about him and that is that he’s British.

I live in Suffolk, England and kind of feel obliged to make this point. xD

“the professor looks like a *** - he’s from the UK .. ..what do u expect?”
Everyone should ignore this since this person can’t even spell “you” so their opinion about any teacher, especially an English teacher, isn’t worth your time.

Also, we all know that British humour and American humour can be extremely different. If you look at the differences between the original The Office, the British version, and the new American one you can see that.
If you don’t find him funny that’s your problem but it has no real impact on whether or not he’s a good teacher.

If all you have to say is “omg hes brittish whut a loosaaa” or “stoopid british humor is soooo not funny!!!1!!1!one!111″ then you shouldn’t bother commenting, really.

Ohh, by the way, he is funny. =3
