Yes he did. good for him. give it right back to those stoners. (cough) tough love is what our educational system needs more of. At least he cares if his students learn or not.
lol I love this guy! I agree with StonerX. Come on, the minute you step into college you have to realize it’s the real world, whining to your parents isn’t going to get anywhere.
agree with Scarlett, but still this dude is way more direct about it than any prof I ever had. I think teachers get jaded after years and years of students being whiny babies. GUy’s probably been dying to tell them to **** off for ever.
I wish there were more professors like this at my school.
Kids need to get over this notion that their professors are there to coddle them for four years straight.
the above person is just stupid. you are dumb and should sit alone in a corner thinking about all the many events in your life that have led up to you being this dumb. do not try to make communication with others because it is wrong to lower their IQ’s along with your own. even though you suffer from intense retardation you can at least refrain from being selfish as well.
Wow! This guy is awesome, I would love to have a prof like this guy rather than the so many other profs I have that have their head up their ***! All I need is someone who is straight up with me, tells me what I need to know and what I need to do to succeed and I’m happy but there are so many profs who like to play stupid games.
right on! i love that he tells his students their parents should have slapped them around! that’s exactly what’s wrong w/ kids today–they need to get slapped around!!!
I really liked that he read of some comments that he thought fairly represented him. He really does seem to put a lot of time and effort into teaching his students and sincerely wants them to do well. Nonetheless, I do not think professors should tell students off with a simple ** if they are offended by their comments, no matter how unjustified. His comment about slapping kids around is especially out of line. It does not exemplify how we think people should treat each other, that is, with dignity.
Ohhhh there really needs to be MORE professors like him. I certainly won’t let my students get away with **** when I become a professor in the future.
I can’t actually do well unless professors give me a good slap that this is the real world. Otherwise I just coast in their class or don’t care to show up. But that’s part of the problem of being at a smal school… everyone knows each other and it’s really recommended not to make enemies…. and students expect to be coddled.
I mean… I thought my advisor was too soft in general until I start working on my honors thesis with her. I almost wanted to cry after our third meeting… and now i’m a much better writer/historian because she got so direct.
I would totally take this guy! I wish I had a teacher who would work with me at night or on the weekend. That is def a teacher who cares! Maybe he is tough, but look at what he is doing that he doesn’t need to do. I’ve had teachers who don’t bother to show up on time or be available for help- these are the teachers you need to be givin negative reports about. You are getting even more for your money with this guy! Plus, you can tel he is hilarious. The best teachers are the ones with attitudes.
oh, and to Steve. No offense, but for a lot of freshman, College is like “the real world.” The no longer have someone reminding them when stuff is due or telling them again and again how to do things, which is a lot like a job. Yeah, you can make college like one big party, but if you want to take it seriously and use it to really further yourself, you have that opportunity. College can whip you into shape if you realize you need it and you let it.
I think this guy is great! As a professor of both online and traditional classes, I understand what it means to bend over backwards and kiss one’s own **** for his or her students only to have the losers who won’t come to office hours, who won’t read the voluminous number of comments I write on their essays and use them to improve the next, and who seldom ever come to class write some piece o’ **** evaluation of what I do as my life’s love and labor. While I NEVER use profanity in the classroom, I can understand the frustration that some professors feel that may cause them to use such crude language. I don’t want to offend my students or be offended by their language in my classroom, but students will know when the feeling of walking a tenuous line when they get jobs and work their ****s off only to get a bad evaluation from a boss who misunderstands them and their efforts. The pain is even more intense if one loves what he or she does for a living.
Fantastic! His comments are dead on. Too many students treat college as if it is something owed them and forget that, in fact, it is truly a privilege to be able to learn from people who have mastered those disciplines. I am infuriated by students who won’t help themselves (yet expect the teacher to bend over backwards to help them), and then speak to the teacher as if he or she is their personal servant. Are you kidding?
And to those students who posted ridiculous comments: YOU want something from him–he needs nothing from you. There are not many teachers who will give you questions before the quiz or answer your email the night before. Most of them give you an F*** you by just giving you a pop quiz without warning. Grow up.
“the above person is just stupid. you are dumb and should sit alone in a corner thinking about all the many events in your life that have led up to you being this dumb. do not try to make communication with others because it is wrong to lower their IQ’s along with your own. even though you suffer from intense retardation you can at least refrain from being selfish as well.”
hahahha right on the moneyy
this prof is awesome, all those lazy *** fools who don’t work hard enough deserve to be told to **** off
I am slightly disturbed by the people commenting on this site that they “love” this guy’s responses. He is unprofessional, unethical, arrogant, and seems nearly insane. Most of his responses are not even logical rebuttals, they are merely personal insults hurled at no one. He points out that he receives a check from the city and “still” comes to teach — does he deserve a medal for doing his job? I thought Baruch was a quality school. Apparently they are only so on the surface. Below, they appear to have the same low standards you find in all the other CUNYs — a perfect reflection of a small percentage of rich people and a majority of uncivilized animals. I can’t believe he said “**** you” in the video to whichever student called him mean.
Listen, “kids”: the fact that you must “Grow up” when you come to college in no way justifies this guy’s attitude. I am amazed how anyone could draw such a lame-brained conclusion, much less defend this creep.
Someone must inform the music department of the Ombudsperson at Baruch, Ms. Freedman, about this unhinged imbecile.
John, why does it bother you that a teacher said “**** you”? I think most of us agree that we don’t mind if a teacher is crude as long as he can teach, and especially if his classes are interesting, which it seems as though this professor’s would be.
i think you’re all dumb***** for saying how students should not be cuddled. what do you mean by that? life really shouldnt be about grades, it should be about the knowledge you gain and how you apply it. unfortunately thats not how it seems to be. if a teacher is cuddling you then he/she is obviously trying their best to help you. now this professor is totally not the cuddling type. in fact those of you who think he’s great to have and go **** yourselfs, this guy is not going to help you out neither in your grades nor your quest for knowledge. all in all i say ditto to the guy above me, John.
He has alot of good points. People should want to be in those classes, and not whine when they realize they are going to have to work at this course. Not to mention, when alot of people rate, they don’t try to do it professionally; there might be a personality clash to they will rate the proff bad, even if it was a good proff. They rate on a person level, not professionally.
I think its great that he comes out and says those things.
Yeah, students shouldn’t be coddled and professors need to be able to actually talk to the students about their behaviour and not tip-toe around it. But this cursing and immaturity really doesn’t do anything to further the cause. If anything, I’d think that it would just put the student’s on the defensive and make them more belligerent.
I would take his course, I think he makes a difference as a professor, but I don’t agree with his swearing. It doesnt matter how bad comments u get from ur students, u shouldnt swear.
But, as I said, I would take his course.
One of the problems with college these days is that students will do whatever it takes to graduate with good grades. That’s why there are now policies on plagiarism and cheating; that is also why students tend to seek out the courses dubbed the “easy-A’s.” How many times have you been able to cram for exams, write mediocre papers, come to class late (if at all) and still receive an A? Well, when it comes to any of Tomasello’s classes the only way to guarantee yourself an “easy-A” is if you actually do the work. What I find unique about Professor Tomasello is that although at times he can come off as a touch arrogant, in actuality he is treating us as his equals, not downplaying our intellectual potential as the lowly students. Because of this he has high expectations for us all—that is one of the reasons for all the course work. He brings the concept of education back into the classroom because, believe it or not, we are students and isn’t the purpose of going to college to learn? If you are actually interested in the subject of music, and you are willing to dedicate the time and work hard, you will reap the rewards of the knowledge he has to offer as well as a sense of accomplishment and a well-deserved “easy-A.” If you can’t handle the hard work then good luck in the real world because it doesn’t get any easier.
Will someone please remind me why this insecure pseudo-professional’s use of the “F***” word should EITHER impress OR intimidate me? You DO get paid to teach, Tomasello, so quit your whining and get back to teaching. I can handle my students’ negative comments. Why can’t you? We’re all entitled to our opinions, even you… but where is YOUR self-restraint?
I had this guy for music. what an ***. when there was a piece playing he would have a ******* fit if you dropped your pen cap on the floor much less coughed or *gasp* talked. He’s a ******* washed up eric clapton wannabe. anywayyyyy
