He makes a valid point about reading almost every book that covers the history of WWII and how that relates to passion; However, you also have show some passion with your delivery when teaching students. I can understand if fatigue is setting in from teaching a subject over and over, but you have to try your best to not come of as a Ben Stein type of teacher (Think of Ferris Bulers Day Off) and sound monotonous to keep a student’s interest. Being a professor is hard work, but delivery and compromising comes first if you want a cooperative class.

By the way, my post wasn’t meant to bash Mr. Citino. I was just agreeing with his thoughts about passion and stating my opinion of what makes a good class. Nobody has to agree or anything.

Dr. Citino is far from a “Monotonous Ben Stein” professor. After taking a couple courses with Citino, I suspect these clips are just that, clips of a much larger interview. As any student that has had the good fortune of taking a course with Dr. Citino would attest, he is energetic, engaging and WELL INFORMED. His classes are akin to watching a great rock performance. He enlightens, entertains and leaves you wanting more, what student could ask for anything beyond this? His passion for his field is contagious and I would encourage anyone that has an opportunity to visit a class or take a course with Dr. Citino to do so.
When Citino says he reads everything on WWII he isn’t blowing smoke. This professor not only reads it, but he synthesizes it and is able to explain how it relates to the previous body of scholarly research and if a new path is being blazed. He really knows military history across all epochs.

I am thankful to have had Dr. Citino as my professor in Fall of ‘05 for WWII Historiography.
You’ll never understand how great he is until you actually have a course with him, and he even plays guitar and takes his daughter to see Andrew Bird.
He makes me miss EMU.

Professor Citino, your passion is commendable. You say it’s hard to imagine how anyone could be in your line of work without passion. Sadly though, too many are. There are many poor professors in this country, just as there are many poor teachers in our primary and secondary public eduation system. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve had several great professors.
I’ve also had the ones who do not prepare for class, run in and out of class constantly, NEVER respond to student inquiries, do everything possible to avoid students, do not grade anything until the end of the semester, etc. I could go on and on and on. I just wish more professors approached their work with this “passion” you speak of.
I’ve even had one professor say to me (when I approached her privately about some issues I had with her class) that she was glad I came to her. Why? Because she wanted an open dialogue? Because she cares about me and about her students about her profession? No. Because she is trying to make tenure and talking to me is better than talking to the dean. That would get her in trouble. Mind you, she said all of this to me on her own. It’s just crazy…

LOL, very funny!! Not my history proff, but my hist. prof is passionate about his meso-american history, and it’svery engaging. Passionate proffs are great because they inspire you learn more (outside of class, even) about their subject.

Kids,
stop using me twice in the word “professor”. Especially if you’re trying to be one.
Thanks,

Hey, F! Sorry I was late for your post, but thanks for using my kid brother. Also I see that your friend Frag wrote that last “sentence.”
Hope you’re not a proff!
